The champions of one day cricket failed badly in test cricket, not against any strong opposition but, Ireland. In the first at Lords England after winning the toss decided to bat first and then came the Irish show.

In the first inning, England was all out for 85 runs. The highest scorer from the English side was Joe Denly who scored 23 off 28 balls. There were three ducks in the England scorecard. The Irish fast bowler Tim Murtagh picked 5 wickets for 13 runs in 9 overs. England was all out in 23.4 overs, lowest ever by England at Lords.

In the reply of English cricket, Irish men played some good cricket but not good enough. The Irish cricket team was all out for 207 runs, 122 ahead of England. The highest scorer was Andrew Balbirnie who scored a maiden fifty of the test so far. He made 55 off 69 balls including 10 fours, with a strike rate of 79.71. Almost a one-day innings. Stuart Broad, Sam Curran and, Olly Stone picked 3 wickets each.

The final over of the day was faced by nightwatchman Jack Leach. England always had a bad record against Ireland for no reason. Remembered the ICC cricket world cup 2011 match in India, when Ireland chased more than three hundred. On the basis of past records and the performance of 1st-day cricket, the Lord's test is pretty much alive and can go either way. Cricket at its best.
